Students will gain an understanding of how spectral data is used in today's intelligence world through structured discussions and review of unclassified case-studies covering major areas of security and defense interest.

Students are introduced to the two sub-disciplines of MASINT that comprise AGI: Radar and Electro-Optical, to include Overhead Non-Imaging Infrared (ONIR). You’ll learn about the AGI community and its history. You’ll gain an understanding of basic AGI capabilities, participate in a discussion of AGI products, real-world applications and signatures.

This course is mathematically and scientifically rigorously correct, but will be taught with phenomenological comprehension in mind. It will cover: (1) The propagation and attenuation of infrared radiation through the atmosphere to an ONIR sensor; (2) The physics and geometry of ONIR sensor orbits; and more.

Students are introduced to the fundamental principles of SAR and its use in AGI. Topics include:(1) Basic radar operation; (2) SAR data collection; (3) SAR scene generation; (4) SAR AGI products (Coherent Change Detection, Digital Elevation Models, Dynamic Imaging), (5) Creation of SAR AGI products, and (6) The limitations of SAR.

Students will be introduced to four areas of AGI: Synthetic Aperture Radar, Thermal Infrared, Multi- and Hyper-Spectral, and Overhead Non-imaging Infrared techniques. For each technique the course provides: (1) Phenomenology review; (2) Detail on current and future capabilities and applications; (3) A summary of national, civil and commercial sources; and more.

Introduction to Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR)

This course is an introduction to Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) theory and phenomenology and will focus primarily on the processing and applications of this data source. Specific applications in elevation modeling, aquatic/benthic and vegetation mapping, and urban terrain characterization are discussed. Successful mission planning is described, including types of systems and aircraft as well as additional sources of data.

The student will be provided with a broad perspective of these complex sensors, covering the scientific to the operational. It will include a look at the necessary hardware, propagation tools and operational and signal processing techniques that allow an electromagnetic equivalent of finding needles in haystacks.
