Understanding the Intelligence Community

Riverside Research Institute (RRI) offers an introductory, non-technical course that provides students with the opportunity to gain a good understanding of the entire United States Intelligence Community (IC), and to learn about its diverse roles and varied mission as related to U.S. policy, national defense, and homeland security.

Who should attend?

Personnel from the government or civilian industrial sector who will work with, in, or around the intelligence community, or who have been working within the community for only a short period of time, will benefit most from this course. This includes: analysts, collection planners, processing technicians, financial analysts, acquisition officers, program planners, engineers, scientists, and all levels of managers.

What students will learn

This course, taught at an unclassified level, will introduce students to the origin and purpose of the IC, its current structure, and the diverse roles and missions of its members. Students will also study the intelligence cycle, the heart of the IC, by examining the entire process used for creating intelligence: identifying requirements; tasking appropriate agencies and systems to collect data; the processing, exploiting, and analyzing of the data; and the production and delivery of timely, accurate, and relevant intelligence products. This course will also touch on other important intelligence-related issues, such as counterintelligence and covert action, homeland security, intelligence oversight, and ethics.
